Mother Hubbards (Erdington)
If you're craving classic British comfort food with a fiery twist, Mother Hubbards (Erdington) on Kingsbury Road might just be your new favourite. This gem in Birmingham isn’t your average chippy-it’s where traditional Fish and Chips meets bold flavours, hearty portions, and surprisingly varied options that make it a go-to spot for locals looking for a satisfying bite.
As you walk in or browse the delivery menu, one thing becomes instantly clear: fish is the star of the show-but not just any fish. From Cod Fish to Haddock and Chips, and the ever-popular Fiery Fish Wrap & Chips, every bite has that familiar crispiness on the outside with perfectly tender flakiness on the inside. The batter is light but flavour-packed, and if you enjoy heat, the Spicy Fish and Chips or Fiery Fish and Chips should top your list.
What sets Mother Hubbards (Erdington) apart isn’t just the quality of the seafood, but the range of comfort dishes and customisation they offer. Want something smaller? Try the Fish Bites, Popcorn Chicken, or Chip Butty for a satisfying quick bite. Need a full-on feast? The Munch Box is a top pick-it’s the kind of meal where you unbutton your jeans halfway through and still keep going.
The sides here deserve just as much attention as the mains. Whether you’re into classic Mushy Peas, tangy Curry Sauce, or rich Gravy, you’ll find plenty of ways to upgrade your plate. They even serve Fried Pickle for something a little unexpected, and if you’re into sweet endings, the Funnel Cake has a loyal following.
One standout that regulars rave about is the Chicken Sandwich-juicy, crispy, and generously portioned. It’s an ideal non-fish option that still hits the same comfort zone. Pair it with Battered Chips and you've got yourself a solid lunch or dinner.
The place itself is well-suited for all types of diners. Whether you're grabbing a solo lunch, meeting mates for a quick bite, or bringing the family for a casual evening meal, the setting is welcoming and accessible. There's wheelchair-accessible entrance and seating, and if you prefer not to dine in, there’s no-contact delivery and takeaway for a hassle-free experience. It’s also Halal-friendly, which makes it even more inclusive for the local community.
Late-night cravings? No problem. Mother Hubbards stays open late enough to catch those post-work or post-pub munchies. Whether you’re in the mood for a light plate or something greasy and glorious, they’ve got you covered. Even better, if you’re on the move, their counter service makes things quick and efficient without compromising on quality.
Another highlight? They serve coffee too. So, if you're stopping by in the afternoon for a snack or just need a warm pick-me-up, there’s a comforting cuppa waiting for you.
While many chip shops stick to the basics, Mother Hubbards (Erdington) leans into variety and boldness. You’re not just ordering fish and chips-you’re building your own experience with different spice levels, sauces, sizes, and textures. Whether you go for the Lemon Pepper Fish, the Fish Cake and Chips, or get adventurous with Spicy Fish and Dips, there’s always something a little extra here.
Overall, it’s not just a place to eat-it’s a local staple that brings flavour, convenience, and a little attitude to the table.

Well I've had some good fish n chips in my time, the Cod and chips were stunning best I've had for a very long time, the only place to top it is the Magpie Resturant in Whitby, beautif ul white flaky cod, a very thin and crispy batter and the chips were spot on, portions just right for the greedy people out there have the XXL cod and chips a massive portion which would feed two. Definitely going back stunning.
Stunning food!! First off, great packaging with your brand on everything even the napkin shows how much you care. Nobody likes soggy fish n chips and it was great to see the food had a divider which makes such a big difference. The chips were a great size portion, nice and chunky fluffy and crispy. The fish was a great size, beautifully flaky, and the batter was crispy and tasty. Overall great price and would definitely order again.
Lovely place to come and have some authentic fish and chips. Bought a variety of items. Classic fish and chips, fish strips and chips and fiery fish wrap. All were made fresh and tasted beautiful. Family all enjoyed it. There's plenty of seating spaces inside to eat too. They also have small free parking spaces just outside.
A nice place. I had the fish, chips and on the side, curry sauce, it was tasty. You get a soft drink with your meal too. For hot drinks, there's a drinks machine in the corner which only takes coins, no card payments. The bathroom was at the rear of the cafe, and was clean and tidy. In fact the whole place was clean. I like the old pictures of Birmingham on the walls ... very nostalgic. It does get a little noisy when there's a lot of people, but other than that, I would recommend this place.
Been to this place several times. Food is lovely and the staff are great, polite, helpful and friendly. On 1 occasion AC was on and kids felt cold. Spoke to a member of staff and switched of immediately. If you have a craving for fish and chips than mother Hubbard's is the place to go. We're a family if six and we always opt for the triple fish deal with a few extras. Dynamite chicken strips are my eldest boys favourite. Hot, very . Only thing I or my kids don't like are the onion rings but then again I think it's probably because we're not a fan of onion rings. Small heath branch (Stafford road), same as above.
